All About Karen

Hi!  I’m a 50+ retired chemistry and physics teacher.  I’m married and live in South Carolina about 45 miles inland from Charleston.  My hubby is also a retired teacher – he taught mathematics.  We have 3+ acres outside of a small town and love to plant and enjoy the outdoors.  We also love our pets.  Currently we have two dogs, Rudy and Rascal, both rescued from the pound and Klinger, the big fat gray cat, who was rescued from a tree on the back of our property many years ago.

My main hobby/advocation is quilting.  I teach quilting, judge quilt shows, and own a longarm on which I do custom quilting for myself and others.  I’m active in a number of quilting guilds and I don’t think a day is complete if I haven’t done something “quilty.”

When I’m not quilting or gardening, I’m reading or listening to an audiobook while I quilt or sew.

So four years have gone by since I first started blogging and wrote the above “about”.  Not a lot has changed in my life…………Rascal and Rudy and Klinger had to cross the bridge and go to heaven.  They are very much missed.  Now we have two black lab mix siblings, Samson and Delilah.  They are 18 months old and living up to their names!!  Samson is a huge 111 pounds and just a big lovable bear.  Delilah is also known as Devil Dog – 77 pounds of terror.  She bosses Samson around and wreaks havoc in the yard and neighborhood.   Samson can go on walks unfettered.  Delilah is on a harness and leash.  If loose you can be sure she will run like the wind and catch a chicken.  Not a good way to make friends with the neighbors!!

I’m still quilting and loving it but have added some other activities to my life.  I’m the team captain for a Relay for Life team.  And I’m active at my church, Harleyville First United Methodist where I’m serving as Lay Leader and president of the United Methodist Women group.  I’m also taking training to be a certified lay speaker for the United Methodist Church.

I have a separate studio on our property for my quilting and it is guarded by my two studio kitties, Callie Cat and Lucy.  They are great company.  Callie Cat is the official quilt inspector – no quilt leaves the studio without her approval.  Lucy likes to help hold down quilt patches when I am piecing.

So another year and a half has gone by since I updated this page – Samson and Delilah are all grown up – Sam is a huge 130 pounds and DiDi is a “tiny” 85 pounds.  Since my last update I have added a second quilting machine that is computerized to my studio and I’m in the process of learning all the ins and outs of digitized quilting.  I have also started teaching longarm classes in my studio and at other sites.  I love to teach and it is so rewarding to see my students blossom and start finishing their quilt with confidence.

Just read the top of this page – guess I should now correct that 50+.  Altho………..60 is 50 plus right?  Pushing that 61 real fast.
