All About Karen

Hi!  I’m a 50+ retired chemistry and physics teacher.  I’m married and live in South Carolina about 45 miles inland from Charleston.  My hubby is also a retired teacher – he taught mathematics.  We have 3+ acres outside of a small town and love to plant and enjoy the outdoors.  We also love our pets.  Currently we have two dogs, Rudy and Rascal, both rescued from the pound and Klinger, the big fat gray cat, who was rescued from a tree on the back of our property many years ago.

My main hobby/advocation is quilting.  I teach quilting, judge quilt shows, and own a longarm on which I do custom quilting for myself and others.  I’m active in a number of quilting guilds and I don’t think a day is complete if I haven’t done something “quilty.”

When I’m not quilting or gardening, I’m reading or listening to an audiobook while I quilt or sew.

*********************************************************************************************************

So four years have gone by since I first started blogging and wrote the above “about”.  Not a lot has changed in my life…………Rascal and Rudy and Klinger had to cross the bridge and go to heaven.  They are very much missed.  Now we have two black lab mix siblings, Samson and Delilah.  They are 18 months old and living up to their names!!  Samson is a huge 111 pounds and just a big lovable bear.  Delilah is also known as Devil Dog – 77 pounds of terror.  She bosses Samson around and wreaks havoc in the yard and neighborhood.   Samson can go on walks unfettered.  Delilah is on a harness and leash.  If loose you can be sure she will run like the wind and catch a chicken.  Not a good way to make friends with the neighbors!!

I’m still quilting and loving it but have added some other activities to my life.  I’m the team captain for a Relay for Life team.  And I’m active at my church, Harleyville First United Methodist where I’m serving as Lay Leader and president of the United Methodist Women group.  I’m also taking training to be a certified lay speaker for the United Methodist Church.

I have a separate studio on our property for my quilting and it is guarded by my two studio kitties, Callie Cat and Lucy.  They are great company.  Callie Cat is the official quilt inspector – no quilt leaves the studio without her approval.  Lucy likes to help hold down quilt patches when I am piecing.

So another year and a half has gone by since I updated this page – Samson and Delilah are all grown up – Sam is a huge 130 pounds and DiDi is a “tiny” 85 pounds.  Since my last update I have added a second quilting machine that is computerized to my studio and I’m in the process of learning all the ins and outs of digitized quilting.  I have also started teaching longarm classes in my studio and at other sites.  I love to teach and it is so rewarding to see my students blossom and start finishing their quilt with confidence.

Just read the top of this page – guess I should now correct that 50+.  Altho………..60 is 50 plus right?  Pushing that 61 real fast.

Thanks again for visiting – come back often!

Hi, Karen. I just wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed looking at your flowers and other pictures. Your place is gorgeous!! Is there any land out there for sale? My hubby and I live on a horse farm in Ladson right now but will be squeezed out of here by commercial developers in the next few years. We prefer a rural setting since we were both raised on farms.
I heard you tell someone at PPQ that you were in a fibro flare. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in the mid-1980’s so I empathize with you. See you soon.

I am new to quilting and I love the Cracked Pots quilt. I ordered Miss Rosie’s quilt pattern but for a beginner the instructions were a little overwheming. Do you know a source that shows you how to make this quilt that is “User Friendly”?
    thanks much,
    Sue

Sue – it is a very difficult set of instructions – actually isn’t too hard to sew – but more advanced than a beginner should tackle. At the Quilter’s Gallery they have taught this as a class and told me they had to rewrite the cutting instructions. I did the same thing as four of us were doing it together and it was very confusing. You might want to check with the Quilter’s Gallery to see if they would provide you with their instructions. I think it’s http://www.quiltersgallery.com but if that isn’t correct just google them – they are in Charlotte, NC.

Hi Judy. I am not aware of an official quilt block for SC. About 10 years ago one of my small groups did a SC block swap and we could not find one then.

Just wanted to send you a note to let you know that so far the hands on longarm quilting class that you taught in Aiken, SC has been the most helpful for me as a beginner. I would like to catch another class with you . Maybe a technique class on easy methods of traveling through a quilt block to block or frame to block. Hope you are having a wonderful Fall.
